Our Cause: Who We Are and What We Do

We are all about Christ Jesus, our Rescuer and Redeemer. He is our cause, the reason why we are a church. Fellowship Church exists to glorify God by making disciples among people everywhere.

We believe that our Creator is worthy of all our praise, and all our efforts. As such, we want to be about what He is about. His mission is our mission. And that mission is that all people, here in Alamance County and around the world, would know Him. Locally, we desire to see Burlington and our surrounding cities and towns experience His gracious goodness. Globally, we desire to be a part of His mission in seeing the nations come to recognize how great He really is. We hope that you will join us in the greatest cause worth living for!

Core Functions of Our Mission: What we are doing as Christ’s church

  • Delighting in our communion with God (worship)
  • Demonstrating our care (service)
  • Deepening our community (fellowship)
  • Developing our character (discipleship)
  • Devoted in our commission (evangelism)

Delighting in our Communion with God (Worship)
As followers of Jesus, our highest goal is to know and enjoy God. Jesus even said that eternal life is knowing the one true God. We were built with eternity in our hearts, and we can’t find satisfaction in anyone or anything until our hearts find Him. By believing in the gospel of Jesus, He makes that possible: He actually brings us into relationship and communion with God. When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, He said the most important one was to love God with everything in you—heart, soul, and strength. When we gather together, worshiping and loving God flows from our lives as we respond to His love. It flows in our music, prayer, time in His word, and in so many other ways. But worship also happens every day. Our deepest desire is to worship Him. No one nor anything else will satisy. We delight in God.

Demonstrating our Care (Service)
Jesus told his questioners that the second greatest commandment was to “love your neighbor as yourself.” This means that since we know how to take such great care of ourselves, we ought to love and serve others with the same intensity. So our desire is to show our love for others in how we care for them. It begins within our church family, and then extends to those who need it in our surrounding area.

Deepening our Community (Fellowship)
Part of the beautiful picture of baptism is that when we identify with Christ’s death and resurrection, we also join with the global and local church as a gracious community of faith. God’s word is clear: You need the church, and the church needs you. Church community is like a large, loving family. The more we know God and grow in Him, the more we want to be with His people, and our sense of community deepens.

Developing our Character (Discipleship)
Jesus said that the church should teach His followers to do everything that He commanded them. He knows that the new life He brings causes change from the inside out. The gospel renews us. Our aim, then, is to progress in Christlike character—to develop into the individuals, families, and church He has designed us to be. Character can only be developed when the Holy Spirit renews and empowers us, and He desires that His word would be taught and caught so that His church might be strengthened and conformed to Christ.

Devoted in Our Commission (Evangelism)
All of the other functions of the church that we have described as our cause could be accomplished much better if we were with God. The problem is that not everyone can delight in Him yet, because they haven’t believed His gospel. So we get to tell them how good He is. He is holy, loving, gracious, powerful. Therefore He has commissioned His followers to tell everyone the good news about Jesus, the Rescuer of our lives. Our church is devoted to this mission He has given us. We have the task and privilege of taking the gospel throughout our cities and towns, and around the world. There is no greater adventure.

Core Values: How we plan to be His church by the Holy Spirit’s power

  • We value truth more than trends or traditions.
    • Believing that God’s Word—on who He is and who we are—is what matters more than anyone else’s opinion
    • Willing to change outdated methods without changing His message
  • We value the gospel and grace more than goals.
    • Demonstrating an atmosphere of gospel grace that promotes “Who we are for,” rather than “what we are against”
    • Concentrating on faithfulness even more than fruitfulness
  • We value relationships more than rituals or rules.
    • Training each other through small groups
    • Encouraging God’s design for the family
  • We value sending and serving more than sitting.
    • Sensing an urgency to share the gospel of Christ with those who don’t know God
    • Reaching outward instead of focusing inward
